Understanding Your Under-Eye Concerns

Understanding Your Under-Eye Concerns

Why do my eyes look tired all the time?

It's one of the most common concerns I hear in clinic, and the answer depends on what's actually behind it.

Puffiness, hollowness, dark circles, crepiness or fine lines around the eyes can be caused by fluid retention, volume loss, skin laxity, sun exposure, genetics, lifestyle, or a combination of all of the above. The eye area has the thinnest, most delicate skin on the face — almost no oil glands and very little supporting fat — so it shows the effects of how you live, sleep, and protect your skin faster than anywhere else. The first step is understanding which type you're dealing with.

If it's puffiness

Usually worse in the morning, after travel, alcohol, or a poor night's sleep. This is typically down to fluid retention rather than ageing — the eye area has very little structural support, so fluid pools there easily.

WHAT HELPS

  • Gentle lymphatic drainage around the eye contour
  • Better, more consistent sleep
  • Managing salt intake
  • Staying hydrated throughout the day

AZRA RECOMMENDS
Intensive Serum
Pat a small amount along the orbital bone using light, upward pressure rather than rubbing into the thin under-eye skin directly. This pressure-based application supports lymphatic flow while the concentrated botanical actives in the serum help calm and de-puff the area.

RESULTS
A fresher, less swollen appearance by mid-morning.

If it's hollowness

This is where the under-eye area begins to lose volume, creating a shadow that reads as tiredness even when you're well-rested. It's one of the natural effects of collagen and fat pad decline with age — and one I see often in clients dealing with chronic stress, where cortisol accelerates this breakdown.

WHAT HELPS

  • Consistent use of a firming, collagen-supporting eye treatment
  • Daily SPF — UV exposure is one of the biggest accelerators of volume and collagen loss around the eyes
  • Facial massage to support circulation in the area
  • Addressing chronic stress where possible

AZRA RECOMMENDS
Intensive Serum, layered under daily Sunscreen
The Intensive Serum is formulated to support the skin's own collagen and elasticity over time, while daily Sunscreen protects the gains you're making by preventing further UV-driven volume and collagen loss. Used together, they treat the cause and protect against the trigger.

RESULTS
Brighter, less shadowed eyes, with results building gradually over consistent use.

If it's crepey skin or fine lines

Sometimes the issue isn't volume loss at all — it's skin quality. As collagen declines, the skin around the eyes becomes thinner, less elastic, and more fragile, and this is also the area where cumulative, unprotected sun exposure shows up first and most visibly.

WHAT HELPS

  • Daily, non-negotiable SPF — this is the single biggest factor in preventing further crepiness
  • A serum formulated to support hydration and elasticity, not just hydrate superficially
  • Avoiding harsh rubbing or stretching of the under-eye skin
  • Microneedling facial with Meta Therapy

AZRA RECOMMENDS
Sunscreen, daily — paired with Intensive Serum

Sunscreen is, without question, the most important "anti-ageing" step for this area. Most of what we call ageing around the eyes is actually accumulated UV damage. I always tell clients: no serum can out-perform what daily SPF prevents. The Intensive Serum then supports the skin's elasticity and hydration from within the routine, working with the skin's natural repair process rather than against it.

RESULTS
Stronger, smoother, more resilient skin around the eyes, and a visibly refreshed appearance over time.

The eye area is often one of the first places to show signs of dehydration, fatigue, and sun damage — so my advice is always the same: support and maintain your overall skin quality, every day, not just when you remember.

  • Prioritise sleep where you can
  • Stay hydrated
  • Limit excess alcohol and salt before important events
  • Wear SPF daily, without exception — rain, cloud, or sun
  • Apply your Intensive Serum and Sunscreen consistently, not just when concerns appear

Healthy skin around the eyes starts with healthy skin everywhere else — and a routine simple enough that you'll actually stick to it.
